The FIDO Alliance announced two new working groups to develop open standards for AI agents acting on behalf of users: an Agentic Authentication Technical Working Group (chaired by CVS Health, Google, and OpenAI) and an Agentic Payments working stream (chaired by Mastercard and Visa). Google contributed its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Mastercard contributed its Verifiable Intent framework as seed specifications; the goal is phishing-resistant mechanisms for user-to-agent delegation, agent identity verification, and verifiable transaction authorization. The initiative targets an estimated $5 trillion agentic commerce market by 2030, addressing the mismatch between authentication models designed for direct human interaction and the delegated, autonomous actions AI agents perform.
