Meta has signed a capacity reservation agreement with Overview Energy, a Virginia startup, for up to 1 gigawatt of solar power beamed from space: satellites in geosynchronous orbit will collect sunlight, convert it to near-infrared light, and transmit it to terrestrial solar farms—allowing those farms to generate power at night without battery storage or fossil fuel backup. Overview plans to begin launching its 1,000-satellite constellation in 2030, with a first test satellite targeting low Earth orbit in January 2028. The deal is part of Meta's commitment to 30 gigawatts of renewable power; its data centers consumed over 18,000 GWh in 2024.
