Anthropic has quietly rolled out identity verification for select Claude users, requiring a government-issued photo ID and a live selfie processed through third-party service Persona. The Register reported the change went live around April 14, with triggers including certain capability unlocks, routine platform integrity checks, and unspecified safety and compliance measures. Anthropic states that ID images are held by Persona and not used to train models; neither OpenAI nor Google imposes equivalent requirements on their consumer chatbots, drawing user criticism.
