OpenAI launches GPT-Rosalind, a specialized AI model for life sciences research

2026-04-17 13:03

OpenAI announced GPT-Rosalind, its first domain-specialized model targeting drug discovery, genomics, and translational medicine, named after crystallographer Rosalind Franklin. The model supports evidence synthesis, hypothesis generation, and experimental planning across highly specialized biology subfields, and includes a free Life Sciences plugin for Codex that connects to over 50 scientific data sources. Access is limited to vetted US-based enterprise customers—including Amgen, Moderna, the Allen Institute, and Thermo Fisher Scientific—due to biosecurity concerns about misuse for pathogen enhancement. OpenAI is launching through a trusted access program and barring non-US entities from applying.
