Elon Musk announced on April 15 via X that Tesla's chip design team has completed the tapeout of its AI5 autonomous driving chip, sending the final design to fabrication. Musk claims AI5 delivers approximately 8x the compute, 9x the memory, and 5x the bandwidth of AI4. The milestone arrives nearly two years behind Tesla's original mid-2025 production target; engineering samples are expected in late 2026 with high-volume production slated for mid-2027, meaning the upcoming Cybercab launch will still ship on AI4 hardware.
