OpenAI announced on March 19 that it will acquire Astral, the startup behind Ruff, uv, and ty — open-source Python tooling with hundreds of millions of monthly downloads. Founder Charlie Marsh and the Astral team will join OpenAI's Codex team, with the stated goal of extending Codex from code generation into the full development lifecycle: planning, modifying codebases, running tools, verifying results, and ongoing maintenance. OpenAI pledged to keep the tools open source. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval.
